Travelling to Budapest, 8 August
Posted: Sun July 31, 2005 08:10 PM UTC

I want to travel from Krakow to Budapest, may be on the
morning of 8 August. How much is the train fare? How long
does it take? Is a bus better? Any help greatly appreciated.

Also, I have booked into a new hotel in Krakow called Awiw.
Any comment about this place? Thanks, Gopal.

As far as I know there isn't any direct train from Krakow to Budapest,
you have to go to Katowice (by train or bus) and then catch the EC 'Polonia" train which goes from Warsaw to Budapest
from Katowice the train leaves at 8.30 am and arrives to Budapest around 16

On the internet I found only prices of tickets from Warsaw to Budapest (your ticket will be cheaper)
Warszawa Budapest
Ticket 2nd class. 71.20 Euro 290.50 zł
Ticket 2nd class (there and return) 92.64 Euro 377.97 zł
Seat Reservation 3.00 Euro 12.24 zł

You can make this journey by taking a train from Krakow via Kosice and through Miskolc and down to Budapest. We travelled from Budapest to Kosice and stayed there overnight so its harder to say how long it took. I think we left Budapest at 3.00pm, arriveing in Kosice at around 6.00pm or thereabouts. The next morning we left Kosice at 6.30am, arriving in Krakow at 1.00pm or thereabouts (this included part of the journey being made by bus because some of the line was closed. I believe it is now open again). I am pretty sure you can do it all in one go, so I am sure you can do it the opposite way too. Can't help on price we had Eurail tickets, I'm afraid

Hi Gopal

There is a direct overnight train from Krakow to Budapest, leaving about 22:30 and arriving around 08.30. There's also a day train, but it involves a couples of changes.

Here's a link to the Polish Railways timetable in English and you can search for times and costs on this:

Sorry, I can't help you with this hotel. I work in the business and have lived here for 12 years, but have never heard of it. Try searching www.inyourpocket.com, then click on Poland and then Krakow. They have a 'coming soon' section, and have very honest reviews. So if the hotel is any good (or bad), it will be listed there.

Have a wonderful time in this magical city.

Best wishes

Marisha
