It's true that Indian roads and drivers take some getting used to. If you hire a car, it's a good idea to hire a driver, too.

You probably should not attempt driving in this area unless you already have experience driving in India. The roads in the city weren't so bad, just very congested, but the highways were quite dangerous!

Ofcourse you can rent a car with a driver( without a driver not possible) if you can afford to instead of taking luxury bus. But remember that you have to pay for return journey even if you don't use the car.
Luxury busess like the one operated by KPN is better than hiring a car considering safety.
