I am taking my family (wife + 4 kids age 16,13,13 and 9) to Zermatt on holiday this summer. Can anyone recommend any hiking routes or sources of information ?

Yes, the above website is really good. You can also write to the tourism office directly like I did. They actually responded with some great info, which I was mildly surprised about. I also emailed the hotel I stayed at for ideas on hiking trails around the hotel area, and they kindly told me everything I needed to know too. It's a great town. For the kids, don't miss the marmot observatory area... but you must be quite quiet or they won't come out. Check out some of the VT members' Zermatt pages on what to do.

The best hiking guide I've found is the "Zermatt Walking Guide". It's a pay download, but I think around 10USD, give or take. In any case it gives you around fifteen hikes with what you'll see difficulty etc. We used it on a trip to Zermatt 2 years ago and had a great time. The tourism office across from the rail station in Zermatt also has some hiking info.
