Place to stay in Stone Town? Posted: Wed April 9, 2003 05:24 PM UTC
Hello VTers. Hope some of you can help me on this one.
As an exotic honeymoon destination, much of the info I've found today about rooms in Stone Town are aimed at the expensive end of the market. There isn't much left in the kitty, after flights from the UK, a safari and a flight to Zanzibar are paid for.
So, can those of you who have stayed cheaply in Stone Town please suggest places to spend a couple of nights in Late July.
Use whatever method you prefer to contact me. I look forward to hearing from all of you.
Thanks in advance.
Dan.

If you are looking for a cheap "charmy" place and don't care much about luxury, try the SPICE INN. This old pension is a real legend in Zanzibar. I would write the address, but addresses are useless in Zanzibar, because you get lost anyway!!. But there are wooden signs in some corners leading to Spice Inn. Otherwise, ask, people are friendly here. The place has a real feeling of faded elegance, but the rooms are run-down, bland and shabby. Rooms are consequently over-priced, but it's got the charm of the old legends. Breakfasts at the 1st floor veranda are nice, as you see the people passing by.
Have a nice trip Joaquin

I stayed in Garden Lodge, a very decent and quiet location close to Africa House, paid $10/night incl. bf. Better rooms (a/c+ s/c) are probably around double that price, but unless you cannot afford it a/c is so much valuable in Stone town or Dar. This is a good place.
On another occasion I stayed in Malindi Lodge, convenienty near the port on a very lively corner ($9 incl. bf / fan). Very good service but very basic.
There are loads of places to stay for $10/room, which seems to be about the minimum.
have fun!

Hi Dan,
you should try the "Shangani House" (not to be confused with the Shangani Hotel). It's a B&B and has only 5 wonderful rooms. Otherwise, in Bububu, which is 5 minutes away from Stone Town, you can find "Salome's Garden", which is a beautiful old palace with only 3 guest rooms. In any case, you should have dinner in the rooftop restaurant of the Emerson and Green Hotel, it's an amazing experience. In general, Stone Town is a magical place and I'm sure that you will have a wonderful time there. Greetings, Caroline

Thanks all, I'll look into all of your suggestions. Just the sort of tips I am after.
This may be our honeymoon, but the budget is spent. We have 10 ither nights in Tanzania and on Chumbe to enjoy the honeymoon luxuries. Cheap and cheerful places in Stone Town are just what I'm after.
Thanks again,
Dan.
