Valparaíso Day trip to Valparaiso
Posted: Tue July 19, 2005 05:20 PM UTC
We will visit Santiago in December and are planning a day trip to Valparaiso. We do want to explore this city by ourselves, doing a little bit of walking, visiting (some of) the elevators, some shopping and having a coffee/lunch somewhere.

Who can suggest a unguided tour; any website ??
I suppose shops and markets will be closed on Sundays ??
What about the safety in Valparaiso during dautime ??
Who knows a bus schedule for Santiago - Valparaiso ??

Thanks a lot
Jaap

about unguided tour you can check turistel.cl it is in spanish though , if you are interested, click "lugares y atractivos", then in the column "ciudades y pueblos " select "centro" then "valparaiso" there is a map and suggestions of places to visit
About bus schedules , they run quite often "tur bus (www.turbus.cl)" run every 20 minutes

Hi, You can travel easily and cheaply from the bus terminus in Santiago to Valparaiso. The journey takes about 2 hours depending on traffic and endless road works. Valpo is very hilly indeed and not suitable for walking around. You will need a hire car or driver. It's quite safe there. Shopping in Valpo is not up to much but Vina is nice if you get the bus or taxi there. It takes about 20 minutes. If you go to Valpo suggest you visit the new marina area in the harbour, Pablo Nerudas house, a boat trip in the old harbour and a fernicular lift behind the navy headquarters which will take you up to some vantage points where there are bistros and artists in residence. It can get very hot there in late Dec, Jan and Feb. Take water with you.
