I was in the northern part of mozambique (Nampula, Cuamba) in August and they were accepting only US dollars. Even at the airport in Tanzania or in Malawi they weren't accepting euro. Maybe in Maputo being the capital is diffferent.
Ciao Maria

Just back from Maputo last week....... what a city!!!!
It depends how you are arriving and where you intend to stay ..... if crossing from SA or Swaziland then change Rand to Metticals for 10% above the exchange rate with the "helpers" here. If flying in then take US$ and chage some to local for use about the city. As per previous answer if heading north then Metticals and US$ are the only currency accepted........ Good luck .....! You'll love it!! Gareth

Although the Mozambique currency is the Meticai, all prices are US$-based, especially hotels, but also many other services. Traveller cheques are generally difficult to negotiate, irrespective of the currency. So take US$, and remember to make a point of visiting Inhaca Island, 35km from Maputo.

Iīd sugest u take US Dollars, they are much wanted there - donīt even dream of exchanging the Dollars to Meticais. They mostly donīt want to accept their own currency lol! I made that mistake when I was there and exchanged my rands to local currency and had a heck of a time!
