Mobile Phones in Tokyo
Posted: Mon July 18, 2005 02:01 PM UTC
I don't think my UK phone will work in Tokyo. Does anyone have any advice about buying a pay as you go mobile for using while I'm there or whether it's better to hire one?

I'm there for 5 weeks.

Thank you!

I would get a pre-paid mobile phone instead of renting one. You can usually choose from 1000yen, 3000ye, or 5000yen cards. If you don't plan to use much or it's to just receive calls, 1000yen card should be good enough to start with. Also, you'll need to choose the service provider. I don't believe DoKoMo nor AU let you do e-mailing, but Vodafone does. No SMS services in Japan.

no it won't.

you can buy pay-as-you-go phones from DoCoMo which are decent. they didn't have SMS messaging when i was there but this was 4 years ago.

to charge the phone you buy a pre-pay card, scratch off the silver foil, dial a number and enter a code. unfortunately all the instructions on the card, and the instructions you hear when you dial the number, are in japanese.

and it's highly unlikely that the people in whatever DoCoMo shop you go to will speak a word of English.

good luck...
