| Jersey | part of the UK? Posted: Mon April 7, 2003 09:24 PM UTC
Why is the island Jersey not under the UK in the VT database? Or am I mistaken?
And does anyone know why Jersey milk is so famous? |

Jersey milk is so famous because it is VERY difficult to extract milk from woolly jumpers. The fact that they can do this means OF COURSE it is a part of the UK. No one else could be bothered. It's too much effort.

Hi Anke-Thea,
You are right, in the VT database Jersey is not under the UK, which we may think strange but which is what the population of the Channel Island want! In many encyclopedeas you find the letters UK (United Kingdom) behind the word JERSEY.....and I think this is caused by Jersey's History. I can of cause tell you: do have a look at my JERSEY PAGE where I, loving bits of history in my pages and tips, have explained why it is difficult for non-Jersey people to come to terms with this strange phenomenon. Please, do go there and if I haven't been clear enough there, please tell me and I can add somewhat more... That for question 1. Question 2: it is in VT's database not under UK......I don't know where they get their info..... Question 3: yes, the grass there is so lush and the cattle is a special breed. Domestic cattle BOS TAURUS is used for dairy products, meat and hides.... But the Jersey breed is a special MILKBREED. Jersey is situated in a fine area because of the Gulf stream. The summer are therefore long and warm, Spring and Fall quite short, as are the MILD WINTERS. The animals live in perfect circumstances and that makes their products so PERFECT. They are often called "Lillie" but that is another story......I would say: SEEMY JERSEY PAGE.... Bye for now, stay happy and healthy, bes-elisabeth

Hi Anke-Thea,
The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man do not form part of the United Kingdom, but are Crown Dependencies; their constitutional links with the UK are based on their allegiance to the British Crown, not to the state itself. Queen Elizabeth II has the title of Duke of Normandy in the Channel Islands, and Lord of Mann in the Isle of Man. See here for more: . http://www.gbz.org.uk/ukcd.htm . As for the milk, Channel Island milk has always been famous for its rich, creamy taste. It used to be the most expensive milk on sale in the UK, but I don't think it's so popular these days, nor so widely available. Milk is not 'milk' now, with all the added 'things' in it.

Thanks Lochlainn and Bes-Elisabeth....
both of you are very enlightening. hahaha! Surprisingly there is little info on Jersey on VT and I see Bes, you have filled that gap admirably. I've been to Jersey long ago and noticed there are different pound notes. Is it a bit like Gibraltar? Or does Jersey want to be independent? What about the other Channel islands? I've wrung out my woolly cardigan but all it yielded was some unmentionable smelly dust.

Ahhhh! Now I get it Geoff.
it's like the Netherlands Antilles maybe? But there ultimately the Dutch government has the last say. Or is it more like New Zealand which also is alleged to the Queen of the UK. Hmmmm..... interesting. Is horse milk fit for human consumption?

The Channel Islands, like Gibraltar and certain other UK 'dependencies', are tax havens. They create so much wealth that they are not financially dependent on the UK, but the Queen is still head of state.
As for horses milk, I have tasted it, of course, and I expect that it is used in certain countries, just like camel's milk, Llamas milk and so on. It's difficult to get it into those waxed cartons though, LOL!.

Hi again Anke-Thea,
I've just been looking and found this, much to my surprise: . "Belgium, approximately the size of Maryland and origin of the Brabant draft horse, specializes in horse (and a few donkey) milk dairy farms, most of them situated in the Flemish/Dutch speaking part. " . Loads more to read here: . http://www.drafthorsejournal.com/features/horsemil

hahaha ! My comment about horsemilk was meant to be funny but you took it all serious.
Of course we all know that goat's milk is good for the skin. I'll give it a try when in or around Waregem (a place in Belgium where I have friends and where horses and breeding are a main activity).

Oh, the Jersey people are very proud of their 1 pound BANKNOTE while the pound in the UK is a thick, heavy coin!!!!
Milk of horses, yes, why not?? camels and goats and more animals give milk where needed but it is never so much as a milk cow gives, that is really amazing! bes-elisabeth

Regardless of its technical status, I think Jersey should be a destination on VT or as a free-standing entity. How about it, folks?

Anke-Thea, some of my friends used to live in Guernsey. I visited & found the milk & cream of very rich quality. the child of one family visiting the mainland once ordered a glass of milk, but because it was white & not the rich gold colour did not recognise it as being milk.

As one of the few born Jerseymen who lives on the Island of Jersey!(however I am from Austrian and Irish parents)!! I think that I can answer the question of 'is Jersey part of the UK'. I am sorry to say.... wait for it....NO .. No I hear people say with disbelief, well sort of anyway. The Channel Islands are part of Great Britain, and not part of United Kingdom(s). The passport I carry has the words British Islands Jersey stamped across it, and the Car I drive has the sticker GBJ on the back. The offical line is: The Bailiwick of Jersey (Jèrriais: Jèrri) is a British crown dependency off the coast of Normandy, France. As well as the island of Jersey itself, it also includes the uninhabited islands of Minquiers and Ecréhous. Along with the Bailiwick of Guernsey it forms the grouping known as the Channel Islands. The defence of all these islands is the responsibility of the United Kingdom. However, Jersey is not part of the UK, but is rather a separate possession of the Crown, comparable to the Isle of Man. It is not a part of the European Union either. The later statement is when it suits me, because I am a member of the EU due to the fact I am a British Citizen.. ;))

My goodness! This posting is really old. From last year or even before, I think.
It still remains interesting. The Netherlands has crown dominions too (Netherlands Antilles, Curacao). They are part of the Kingdom of The Netherlands. But they run their own governemnt (status aparte). Hmmm, I should update my knowledge about those things.

Hi Jasen, And Anke-Thea,
Wow, this must be something of a record, not sure that I've seen postings resurrected after more than TWO years!! Welcome, Jasen, to Virtual Tourist, and if you are 'at home' in the Autumn, we might even meet up for a beer or two, as we are hoping to visit from Cornwall. As for milk. Well, all that's available here even in the West Country, Land of the Cream Teas, is supermarket rubbish, that tastes like it's made from powdered milk. Have a nice day, everyone, it's going to be another scorcher here, and we're off to the beach later.
