Baseball advice please
Posted: Mon April 7, 2003 12:07 PM UTC
I would love to go and see the Cubs while I'm in Chicago between 10th and 16th April. I've checked the Cubs wesite and they will be playing Pitsburgh and Cincinatti while I'm there. I don't know anything about the game but am keen to learn. Can anyone suggest which game would be best and the best place to sit .

What are bleachers?

What do the following abbreviations mean which appear on the fixture list: WGN, FSNC and WCIU ?

Is the Wrigley Field far from downtown Chicago?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Brian

the abbreviations on the fixture list are the tv stations carrying the games.

will let someone from chi answer about their bleachers.

Griffey's injured, see Pittsburgh instead

The Pittsburgh Pirates game will be more exciting than watching the Reds without Ken Griffey Jr. The Pirates have one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now, Reggie Sanders, and so a seat in left field may earn you a home run ball.
There is a different pitcher for each game so try to find out in advance which game will feature Mark Prior or Kerry Wood starting for the Cubs.

Wrigley Field is about four or five miles north of downtown Chicago. It is accessible by the el-train, but be sure you know what you are doing otherwise you might get lost. If unsure of the route, take a cab. Check the weather forecast and go on the date that is likely to have the warmest weather. It can be pretty cold sitting in Wrigley Field on an overcast day in April.

To get the real insider experience go to the ballpark early and line up for bleacher tickets. Bleachers are the unassigned seats in the outfield. They are the furthest seats from where the batters stand--but it is where the rowdie fans hang out. Also it is the best place to sit on a sunny day since there is no canopy overhead.

Finally, at the risk of touting my travel pages. Look at my Chicago page for a view of Wrigley Field from the bleachers.

Zrim is right about the description of the bleachers but I saw bleacher tickets for sale on the Cubs website so I don't think people line up for them anymore. They used to do that (and I think they used to also be the cheapest seats). Hopefully someone who has been more recently than me can confirm that.

You shouldn't need to take a cab, the el is probably the best way to get there. The CTA instructions are also on the website. The Addison el stop is only a block from the park so you should be able to follow the crowds to Wrigley. The CTA's website computes the trip at 18 minutes, give yourself a bit more time for delays.

From the loop here are the instructions for the CTA:

"Get on Howard/Dan Ryan red line at the Jackson/State, Monroe/State, Washington/State or Lake/State stations. Take the northbound train to the Addison Street stop, which lets out one block east of the ballpark."

BTW, the game was snowed out today! That's Chicago in April for you.

Bring warm clothes and try to get a seat in the sun.

I'm sure it's going to be terrific!!!!

Brian, all I can say is just go there.

It was always a dream of mine to go to Wrigley Field, and I finally got to a few years back.

Check out my Chicago page for a tribute to Wrigley field.

It is one one the last few remaining old time classic ballparks, so go there and experience it, while you still can.

The bleachers are definately fun but it is hard to get bleacher tickets for weekend and evening games. If you do get tickets, the entrance is across from Murphy's Bleachers on Waveland. Any seat in Wrigley is worth the experience. Go Cubbies!

Go Cubs!

I sat in the upper deck way up behind home plate. What a view of the ivy covered outfield wall and the buildings of the Chigao skyliine.

and the surrounding neighborhood buildings where there were bleacher seats on top of these buildings to watch the game!

Hurry up, and go there! I heard though that last year they outlawed the seats on top of the neigborhood buildings!

Just go there, you will have to park a ways away.. Some kid in the neigborhood will offer to park your car on his property, and when you get back your car will be blocked in.

Just walk down the blocks, and find a neiborhood bar, and have the best pizza you have ever had in your life.

Enjoy

Ginos East for pizza. Get a size smaller than you think. You will be suprized how filling it is even though you want to keep eating.

Just my opinion, but I always thought Ginos East was a bit overrated.

My favorite place for deep dish is a place called Bachino's. Not crowded and a great deep dish. There are a couple of locations, but I usually go to the location on Lincoln and Geneva in Lincoln Park.

I wish I could remember the name of the bar.

The game went into extra innnings so we took off to beat the crowd. Parked about six blocks away, and when we got back to the house we were parked at, the kid was nowhere to be seen, and our car was blocked in.

So we walked a few more blocks until we found a bar, and watched the rest of the game on tv.

But the pizza was Chicago thin crust, and it was the best pizza I have ever had in my life!

What a great experience to go to Chicago, and that day of going to Wrigley Field!

I'll never forget it for the rest of my life.

Hi Brian,
If you want a better suntan you can go for bleachers tickets, but to watch a game and to get the best fun of it, you should take the place close to the field. You may buy a cheap ticket somewhere on the last row and then change your place few minutes before the start of the game. There will be plenty of free places even in first 10 rows.
I did so myself with my friend. Actually, nobody minds it... We had a great fun, sitting very close to the field.
