Where to go?
Posted: Fri July 8, 2005 06:30 PM UTC
Hi,

A friend and I are looking to spend a five day vacation in late August somewhere out west. We would like to stay somewhere relaxing (like a spa) where we could hike, etc, and/or we'd also be interested in a low key city. Does anyone have any suggestions of places like this in Colorado? Ideally, these places would be not too expensive and convenient to an airport...

Thanks!

Staying close to an airport is going to be difficult unless you fly into one of the small (and expensive) airports closer to the tourist areas. Otherwise you're probably stuck flying to Denver and then getting a car to drive up into the mountains. Places reasonably close to Denver that you might like are the Rocky Mountain National Park and surrounding area, the area around Dillon and Frisco, or Vail (an expensive upscale town, but nice). If you don't mind a longer drive I've always thought Aspen is a nice place (but also more expensive and upscale than other parts of the state).

Any particular reason why you chose Colorado instead of a different state out west? I ask only because there are lots of other choices, some of which may be more convenient if you don't want to have to drive from the Denver airport all the way through the city and then up into the mountains. For instance, the area near Santa Fe, New Mexico is quite nice, and less crowded than many parts of Colorado. I'm sure other people could recommend places in Utah, Montana, or other western states, but I'm not familiar with any of them.

There is an area near Vail called Eagle Creek or something like that (I'm getting the name wrong, but its just slipping my mind) Anyway, there's a lodge and spa there and its pretty close to some good hiking. Vail has its own airport too. But, as the previous poster said, this will be quite expensive.

If you're set on Colorado, then definitely go for it. Its a beautiful state and there's lots to do. If you're looking for an alternative, there is a hiking spa in St George Utah called Red Mountain. Its close to the St. George airport and will pick you up there or in Las Vegas, which is about an hour and a half away. They run some good specials in the summer.

Hope that helps.

goingsolo, are you thinking of Beaver Creek maybe? If so, that's also a nice area.

Its in that area. I think its called the Lodge at Cordiellera (sp?). I think its in Eagle County or Eagle Creek, something like that and its in the general vicinity of Beaver Creek. I've been to Vail but not Beaver Creek, but I've heard that its nice there, too.

All in all it sounds like Sedona Arizona is perfect for you.

Actually YVRDave has an excellent idea. Sedona probably would be perfect for you. There are tons of places to stay and it's an easy drive from the Phoenix airport. It's not really a mountain destination like Colorado would be, but the rock formations are amazing. There's plenty to see and do in Sedona, but it's also a relaxing place if you want it to be.

Thanks for your advice! (I think we are leaning towards Wyoming or Montana now.)
