Be careful of rumors and gossips. Lagos is a good and vibrant city. Cannot be described except by those who live in it. As long as you are not going there backpacking and have contacts there, you should be fine. Lonely planets for West Africa is a cute uide to it also.

Hi,
Nigeria as a whole is NOT SAFE and especially Lagos is known for con artists, robbery and kidnapping. SAFE you ask?? NOT!!!!!
I lived there for approx. 1 year and found out it is far from safe. One must travel about with people that you know well in order to be safe and even at that there is alot of risk factors. It is not even safe to take a taxi.
Don't travel from the airport when it is dark, try to book a flight IF YOU MUST GO that will arrive in day light as many times people are robbed on the highway from the airport.
Also, DO NOT use your credit card even at a major hotel. Cash only and be careful not to flash money. Many pick pockets, so don't keep all your money in one place. I found out the hard way as I was pick pocketed in the market and didn't even know until later! They are that slick.
good luck, you'll need it if you go to Nigeria as even the police are corrup an ask for 'dash'...bribes.
