Hi,
They say that area is nicknamed "Byron's Grotto" because Lord Byron supposedly swam from there to Lerici to visit his friend Percy Shelly.
I haven't been there myself yet, but the area sounds breathtakingly beautiful!!

Thanks G.G. !
The sign was posted close to San Pietro Church, under a window , facing the coastline of Cinque terre.
To swim from there to Lerici is something like 50 Km...
...so I guess he rather took a boat

We actually have 4 fellow VTers in that area right now (as we type!)
Jenn_D, Jenn75, Johnny_CA, and Suzanne_M.
I'm expecting a phone call from them in a few hours from the Cinque Terre!!
(I will tell them about the Lord Byron Grotto and see if they can jump in and take the swim to Lerici ! They can tell us how long it actually takes to get there! ;-> )

no, they crossed the gulf swimming severa times and shelley drown during one of the crossing. the gulf is also called the poet's gulf. the grotto is not on the side where they started swimming, is just a place where byron was said to go for inspiration.

I think they're staying at a B & B in Manarola.
Here's the link to the WEB CAM they will be standing in front of at 9pm Italy time tonight:

That's too bad Uttz! I know the Jenns had posted something here in the Forum a little while ago about a mini-meeting in Pisa and Cinque Terre. That's how Suzanne_M found them! (Zu Zu).
I'm sure they would've loved to have you there if they knew you were so close!
Alas, poor Johnny_CA has to be the only male in the company of 3 smokin' hot women !! ;->

Well hi gang! Glad you're drunk, but if you're cold, you're not yet drunk ENOUGH! I'm waving at a black screen... trying to figure out which white dots are really you.

Re: Re: Lord Byron Grotta Posted: Fri April 4, 2003 06:25 PM UTC
Okay folks ! Here is the up-to-the-minute newsflash:
The VT gang are still enjoying dinner and good local wine......they have not made it up to the web cam yet! (Poor planning on Johnny's part he said).
I read them the newsflash on the Community News bulleting board, so they will be sure to make it up to the web cam (once they FIND it ) in a 2 hours! They will call me once they are there!
Jenn_D was so flattered by the VT notices that she said she will gladly "change costumes" in front of the cameras!! (Note: She said to please keep in mind that it is 18 degrees there at the moment....she will be freezing her arse off.....and certain parts will surely show how cold it is!) ;->
We managed to get Ivan_Jimenez on the line as he was happily enjoying his fresh sebring off the coast of one of the Greek Isles . He said there is no way in hell he will be looking for a web cam there.
(Rest of conversation is censored, folks....)
Check out the webcam soon !!!!

G_G,
Ask our friends for a kiss from a cute Italian waiter (or CHEF) on the postcard that they send me, please! Perhaps a couple splashes of chianti and olive oil too.
