| San Luis Potosí | Please Help Posted: Fri April 4, 2003 01:11 PM UTC
My sister is moving to San Luis Potosi on a two year project with her job. My family and I are kind of worried about her safety. We have several questions about the standard of living there, the people, the culture, etc. Please enlighten us on the area, the plus/minus of living there etc.

Although I've never been to SLP specifically, my several experiences in Mexico have been wonderful and I have been too all kinds of different cities. If she learns a little spanish and doesn't go out at night or to seedy places by herself she will be completely safe I'm sure. You should visit her while she's there!

A completely modern city with all the amenities and social structure of any developed area. She will be as safe or safer than any other urban environment.

Hello,
Sometimes I don't know what to think about the generalized idea people have on my country. I don't blame them because this stereotype has been spread mostly by the media. Unfortunately each country is not independent as on the image they can project to the ouside. Because of this my country probably has Speedy Gonzalez image, people living on dusty ground, traveling on donkeys, wearing big hats and ponchos. Just look at the latest Hollywood pictures that talk about Mexico (Traffic or The Mexican for example). That is not Mexico, beleive me. In Dublin I felt offended when at the airport's restaurant area I noticed a sign asking people to clean their places after lunch. The sign depicted a man on a big hat and a poncho sleeping on a cactus with the legend "Don't be lazy, clean your mess..." I have never felt that offended in my entire life. I would suggest to people worried about traveling to my country, or never willing to do so, to find out about it before judging. San Luis Potosi is a very industrialized state within Mexico, a developed region in the country. It is touristic as well despite not being as pretty as many other places. If you want to find out about it you can search on Google or any other web searcher. You'll find pages such as http://www.sanluispotosi.gob.mx/ which is the official government page of this wonderful state. Unfortunately most of the page is in Spanish (the second most spoken language in the world), but you can go to Altavista (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) and use it's webpage translator to find out the content of any webpage. If you require further information let me know and I can get something for sure. I live in Queretaro (you can take a look at my page), 2 hours away from San Luis and 2 from Mexico City. Hope your sister enjoys her stay, because I'm sure she will and I hope all your family can take the chance of visiting her so your idea and worries vanish. Take care, Alfredo
