Fremantle Fremantle with kids in July/August 2005
Posted: Wed June 29, 2005 05:12 AM UTC
I am staying in Fremantle for three weeks with two sons (3 and 8 years)- at the end of July and beginning of August. I'm looking for information about places to eat (suitable for children) and things to do between 8 am and 5 pm. Also, which trips would you recommand me for weekends (to sleep over for a night or two somewhere else, perhaps)? What are the costs for inner flights (eg. if we want to go to Sharks bay)?
I'll be glad if you give me some tips.

July/August is still pretty cold in Perth, so I won't recommend the water parks in southern Perth! The maritime museum in Fremantle has lots of stuff about the mutiny on the Batavia which might interest the boys, incluing a skeleton and the remains of the boat. There is a very large indoor playground on Henderson Street (which I can't remember the name of sorry!) which is perfect for rainy afternoons, the boys can run about, dive into baskets of balls and go down slides for hours! If you get a clear day it is worth heading up to Whiteman park in the far north suburbs to see lots of native Australian animals. Food-wise you'll be spoilt for choice in Fremantle as there are lots of restaurants, a fun option is fish and chips at Cissarellos on the wharf, which is near a big park for running around afterwards. A weekend trip down south to the Karri forsts is a brilliant idea, it is cold down there, but the forests are wonderful and there are caves and wildlife parks to visit while you're down there too, head to places like Pemberton and Margaret River. Internal flights can be expensive in WA, as the budget carriers of the eastern states haven't really expanded into our areas too much, but if you book early enough you may get a good priced flight.

The maritime museam is very good down on Fremantle warf area. If you catch the free CAT bus it wil take you around Freo and you cna get on and off when you fancy or do the whole trip then do it again and get off!!! The boys may enjoy the Fremantle Prison tour. There are plenty of movie theatres and like previously stated there are kiddy places were kids can go mad on all sorts of inside things while you can sit and enjoy a coffee. La Porchetta in Fremantle is veery kid friendly and sells wholesome cheap pasta and pizza with free delicious bread rolls, also down at Ciccerellos you can enjoy fish and chips either inside or out. There are markets open fri-Sunday that sell all sorts of treasures and souvenirs. I dont think you can fly to Shark Bay but you may want to check out the website for Skywest. Alternately you could take a bus up the coast and book a motel.
