Luleå Living standard info

Hi, I'm going to work in Lulea for 10 months and since I have a limited suitcase space, I want to know if the price of daily items are expensive? Such as pots and pans, etc. As I'll be living on a budget, anywhere that I can purchase these items 2nd hand or cheap? It might sound silly... but do they have Ikea in Sweden? Thanks in advance :D

:)) Sorry, Cat but I had to smile... IKEA is Swedish :)
BUT have checked the swedish ikea page, and it looks like nearest IKEA is in Sundsvall, a bit further south (300-400km, maybe more???) http://www.ikea.com/
You can shop almost all items on-line when you arrive.

I haven't been to Luleå since my childhood summer vacations. Found a Luleå city & area page, even in english. Maybe you get some more info there?

They have flea-market in Sweden as we also have in Norway, not sure how frequent they are up north...

Some flat/rooms you rent can also come with basic kitchen equipment...

Other shops where you can find basic kithchen equipment for ok price are eg. Clas Ohlson and Åhlens.

Click on their name for furter info of their web page.

Have a nice stay in my neighbour country, which is not as expensive as Norway.

Haha, yes I too had to smile. The name IKEA means Ingvar Kamprad (the name of the founder) Elmtaryd Agunnaryd (the two villages he came from).

You can find cheap pots and pans in your local Coop Forum too. It's like a hypermarket. As for second hand, even the smallest Swedish town has one so I'm sure Luleå will as well.

I live in Luleå, and don't worry. You can get everything you need here; pharmacy/drugstores, shopping clothes, food etc, both cheap and expensive.

You can go to ex. Coop Forum, ICA, Kvantum, OBS, Dollarstore. Some of them are in City, some are in Storheden. When you come here, look for Storheden in the local bustimetable and hop on the bus to Storheden. In City there are Smedjan, Strand, Shopping, Åhlens, they are shopping gallerias with kitchen equipment, books, clothes, cd, music, cafeteria etc. Clas Ohlson is in Smedjan, they have kitchen equipment among other things.

Nearest IKEA is in Sundsvall. You can go by car early in the morning (about 5 hours with car Luleå-Sundsvall) spend the whole day at IKEA, and go back home late at night.
But this winter, they will open a new IKEA in Haparanda, more close to Lulea, 2 hours with car from Lulea. So if you have patient, you can wait until the première day!

There are also several second hand/thrift shops in Luleå. There is a large Myrorna (run by the Salvation Army) out in Storheden, and a Kupan (run by the Red Cross) in Södra Hamn, near the city centre. Both of these usually have cheap basic kitchen equipment.

Welcome to Norrbotten, by the way!

No, they're not really within walking distance...though that depends on how far you're willing to walk of course. :-) I'm not sure how long it would take to walk there, as the few times I've been to the university in Luleå it's been by car. But the buses run quite frequently, and if you get a bike you can probably easily bike downtown from the university area (not sure about biking to Storheden though).
