Shkoder Side trip to Shkodra from Ulcinj, Montenegro
Posted: Mon June 27, 2005 12:31 PM UTC
Dear all,

I am planning to do a short side trip with rented car to Shkodra, from Montenegro. Could you tell me how the roads are, the security situation on the road, what do I have to pay to enter Albania and are there extra fees for car insurance? How safe is it to park a car in Shkodra (it has Slovakian number plate).
Cheers

The road from Ulcinj to Shkodra have been recently paved and is OK, the security on the road is certainly OK. I think you have to pay 10 euro as enter fee, but I don't know if you have to pay anything additional because of the car. Generally it would be safe to park your car in Shkodra, but try to find central places for parking.

Hi! Have travelled all over Albania many times 2002-2006. If you leave the car overnight anywhere you will always find places where it can be locked away with a night( or day) guard for about 200 lek (£1 sterling). Campsites are unheard of! Hotels are cheap and few and far between. Roads are an experience - even the main routes are often pot-holed and rough, ven in coities - but every minute is worth it - be prepared for the trip of a life-time!! Water and electricity go off in most places for several hours each day - store some water like all the locals do - rubbish collection and infrastructure in general hardly exist - but a visit will probably change the person you are. I am somewhat addicted to Albania!!! Read Robert Carver's book The Accursed Mountains before you go... for a taste of things to come!!
Go for it!!
