when i was going to India i had with me both - US dollars and travellers cheques in USD.
out of big cities it might be hard to change the cheques, but other then that there is no big difference.

make it 50:50, just to keep ur money safe.

Part cash and part chq is a good ideas. Often in the cities shopkeepers also accept dollars.
At all the tourist places there is no problem encashing the TCs.
What ever be the ratio keep it safe.
Enjoy

You can use TC as well as USD converted to Indian rupees. Most of the shops in the cities accept VISA/Master Cards.

In small cities INR is always welcomed.

You can't legally bring rupees in or out of India. Sterling or US dollars bills or TCs are fine. When you get to your first Indian airport you can exchange some for rupees.
