I think the castle in Schwerin is the most beautiful. Have a look at my Schwerin page for a photo.

What a difficult question! And I can't give you the answer....
Neuschwanstein is a beautiful castle to take pics of it. But the interior is rather disappointing, in my opinion. Have a look at that webpage - you have there a choice and short description of some castles.

Well, you guessed it right yourself already. Neuschwanstein is indeed by far the most beautiful castle in Germany and I would even say in the world. The setting and the impossible place to built it, besides the fairytale-like shapes, take care of an unforgetable memory (see my general Germany-page).

Well and to add some possibilities. Throughout Munsterland (just East of The Netherlands, there is an amazing amount of smaller and larger castles with spectacular variety. Also quite intresting area to go castle-hunting.

Best regards, Paul

In addition to Paul's entry: try www.muensterland-tourismus.de. In the middle of the page you'll find some links, most of them to castles (sorry it's in German!).
see also your Europe-forum..

in addition to the previous one:
http://www.muensterland-tourismus.de/kultur/schloesser/schlossdb/index.html
shows all the castles in this region. Some may be older and better preserved indoors, but none of them matches Neuschwanstein for its location and "look"!

I think all of the castles and palaces of Ludwig II. (the crazy king of Bavaria) are incredible. These are Neuschwanstein, the most famous one near Füssen (photo on my Füssen page) and Linderhof near Garmisch-Partenkirchen (small but beautiful) and Herrenchiemsee, his copy of Versailles which he built on an island on Chiemsee, Bavaria's biggest lake. This palace is so impressive on the inside (it actually cost more than Neuschwanstein and Linderhof together), so that I made a page about it, have a look!

Besides from these castles, Germany has many Baroque palaces, like Nymphenburg and Schleißheim in Munich or the palaces in Ludwigsburg, Karlsruhe or Würzburg! I love Baroque palaces too, but maybe that's not what you were thinking of...

Neuschwanstein is IMO a sort of Disneyland. Its setting is spectacular, though.

However, it depends on what you like: a romantic medieval castle or a Baroque palace.

I cannot tell you ONE favourite, there are so many and all are beautiful.

Yes, Neuschwanstein is the most beautiful in my opinion considering the structure itself and the setting. But my favorite is Burg Eltz on the Mosel River.

Yes, Neuschwanstein is unique. Disney modelled his Disney-castle after it.
I don't quite understand the poster who said that it's not impressive on the inside...
the beautiful rooms were modelled after operas of Richard Wagner, Ludwig's favorite composer.
There are a few pages on VT which show the beauty of the rooms.

Bigger is not always better!
I loved most of the little, some rundown, some pretty good, castles in the Rhine valley between Cologne, Koblenz and Mainz on both sides.

Each have their little story.
Haven't identified all the one I got in my travelogues.

My favourite castle is Burg Eltz on the river Mosel. But, however, it really depends on what you like - I prefer the medieval fortified castles to the fancy buildings of the crazy bavarian king...

Neuschwanstein?
Posted: Mon April 7, 2003 06:11 PM UTC
Neuschwanstein? But it's a fake castle! It was built in the 19th century, when the rest of the Euro royalty had palaces. It's nearly completely empty, a tourist trap to boot, and came to existence from the fairytale fantasy delusions from a derranged homosexual.

This is my personal favorite - a "real" castle near Aschaffenburg:

Bückeburg???!!! Where the he... is that?!
And I don't see what is so "fake" about Neuschwanstein. It is over 100 years old and Disney modelled his castle after it. The disney castle is fake - Neuschwanstein is the original!

Bückeburg is magnificent. Too much Baroque for my taste, though.

I absolutely agree that Neuschwanstein is a tourist trap. In fact it was modeled after theatre decorations of Wagner's operas "Lohengrin" and "Tannhäuser". Architect was a painter for theater decorations - Christian Jank. Neuschwanstein doesn't have any history.

What about the Wartburg near Eisenach?

Neuschwanstein is fake!
Posted: Tue April 8, 2003 11:01 AM UTC
Neuschwanstein is fake because it was built as a castle (Burg), when it really is a palace (Schloss). A castle was a fortress to protect the village people from marauding armies in the middle ages. Ludwig II hated people, and would have never let any villagers in his castle. It is fake in the sense that the knights in shining armor had been dead for 300-500 years before the very first stone was laid for this castle. In that sense it is no different than Disney's castle, which is only a copy.
Likewise if Bill Gates were to design and build an original castle in the Sierra Nevada in California, I have to ask if that would be considered a real castle, or a fake one.

Neuschwanstein is a mix between a castle and a palace.
It was the "crazy king" who built it remember?
And by the way...who cares...Disneyland was built a couple of years ago and people still love it! :)

Re: Re: Castles in Germany

My opinion about Neuschwanstein:

It is one of the most visited castles in Germany and the fact that it is not as old as other castles and palaces with more "pedigree", it does not mean that it does not have a historical significance. You have to put it in the context when it was built and by whom it was built.

In this sense, I would rather compare it to other eccentricities such as the Hearst residence in California than to the Medieval and Barroque castles and palaces, as the function, the concept and the meaning are totally different.

Neuschwanstein is the result of a romantic idea about the past and looks very attractive in the eyes of the average tourist. Add to that a spectacular location and a good marketing campaign and in the end you have a number 1 tourist attraction.

However, if you are more interested about "real" castles and their role in the German and European history, then you'd better look for some other of the many castles that abound in the country.

Neuschwanstein is over 100 years old - to any American or Japanese tourist this is already very old! :)

And I think it's ridiculous to call it "fake", only cause it may not be 300 years or older...

Neuschwanstein is a beautiful fake!
Posted: Wed April 9, 2003 01:16 PM UTC
Dear Henkster,

Please see the comment from DanielF. I have no doubt that millions of Americans and Japanese ooh & aah at this castle. Let me put this way, it is the most beautiful royal RESIDENCE (not castle) that many of them have ever seen. Classifying it as a castle is a weakness of the Bavarians, who rarely seem to use the word palace (Palast). It may be over a hundred years old, but historically, it's not a castle, period.

Well, the Japanese have old and very beautiful castles in their country.
I was was very surprised to see Bückeburg mentioned in this discussion . It is where I went to school and it is a very beautiful castle indeed. But there is a very beautiful baroque castle in Celle. Hannover castle does not exist anymore.
I have seen most of the mentioned castles and to my opinion the castles along the rivers Rhein adn Mosel are the most beautiful and romantic castles in Germany. Specially Burg Eltz at Mosel river is a very romantic medieval Castle.

Castle eh?

OK just to say something. The castle in Disney World is only modeled like Neuschwanstein, but its so far from being the same! Everyone knows that the title is castle! Yes maybe they shouldn't of classified it as that but they did. All books will say castle not palace. So there.
