Saint Kitts and Nevis Getting around Nevis

We're traveling to Nevis next April to get married. Planning on staying at Montpelier Plantation Inn becuase we've read so many great reviews of it and we're planning on eating at all of the great places that everyone has suggested.

The question is travel - It seems like it would be beneficial to rent a car in order to really see the island, but my fiance thought it would be more fun to rent a scooter for at least a few days. Does anyone know if that is possible there? I can't find anything on it on the web. Are the roads decent enough for it or would we be limited on where we could travel.

Any other advice for us? We've never been south of Florida! Thanks!

We were just there in August. The roads are best described as "semi-good" in the area that Montpelier is in. Go east(toward Golden Rock)and they quickly change to "poor", go west of the Inn (toward Charlestown)and they are better. We rented an all terrain jeep and drove all the way around the island twice while we were there and believe me you definitly need it between Nesbit Plantation and Golden Rock (eastern side of the island). Truthfully it was worth it because this is where alot of the ruins are, the best views of Antigua and Barbuda (You'll know the spot as soon as you see it!) and the best place to see a monkey!
Not to say you won't find any scooters to rent but I did not see any on the roads. Although, I can see where one would be useful in Charlestown. The traffic is going both ways on some parts, the streets are narrow, have parked cars on either side, deep gutters and not to mention that pedestrian traffic is heavy. Oh, and you have to drive on the left side of the road. Good luck we were there in the off season!

Oh sorry HOW COULD I FORGET!!! ..... watch out for the sheep, goats and occasional errant donkey or cow. They usually get out of the way and are part of a herd. They are every where outside of Charlestown.

I have been to Nevis over 20 times now, the best advice I can tell you is to rent a car if staying in Montpelier. Taxi fares will kill you, and you certainly don't have the freedom to get around. During the day you can catch the local buses, very cheap, and FAST. Lots of fun too. See this page for more info on getting around Nevis..actually titled getting around Nevis. Everything from taxis to limos

Hope this helps, enjoy your stay.
