| Tieling | help! Posted: Sat June 18, 2005 02:45 AM UTC
I'm leaving for Tieling City, in Liaoning Province in July. Please give me any information on the city. This is my first time to go to China, my first time to work and stay in a country other than my own (which is the Philippines).
Any suggestions, tips, etc would be very much appreciated. Thank you! |

You will need warm coats, sweaters and gloves; all of which will be available cheap in Tieling department stores.
Tieling's nickname in Chinese is "Grain and Coal City" That gives you an idea of how interesting it is. This is a city which touts its best tourist attraction as being a small temple that was built in 1921. This is a city focussed on economic growth and the mayor, Mr. Li Wenke and vice mayor, Ms. Zhou Yiying are among China's young generation of promising leaders. (They recently returned from an investment promotion tour of UK and USA last month.) Fortunately Tieling is only about an hour and a half from Shenyang, the provincial capital and nearest contact with modern civilization. You will discouver this lifeline early during your stay in Tieling and become an expert on Tieling-Shenyang transportation (bus and train schedules). For more information on Tieling living conditions you can try contacting Ms. Arly Villanueva at the Tieling New Hope Language School: arlywang@hotmail.com

Why are you going to Tieling? I have worked there before, and though some of the people are nice, they can also be a little difficult. The city itself is quite small, summer is nice enough, but as Confucious said, the winters will be freezing. Be careful if you are going to a langauge school, you may be the only teacher around. Tieling only has 4 or 5 foreigners at a time.
I have some good friends in Tieling. If you want any help, then let me know, I will put you in touch with them.

Yes, I'll be teaching in a language center. I was told that there are a couple of Canadians and an American teaching in the school too. What do you mean by the people being "quite difficult"? Unfriendly? Nosy? Is the place very undeveloped? I am beginning to get nervous now...
