Hei you all, Norsk people!

I'm starting to plan my holidays, and Trondhiem seems to be on top at the moment. I've got a friend living there now, and I guess I'd come and see him (sleep for free) and on the way visit the city and the landscapes.

I've been to Norway before, and now I'd like to see trees with leaves and de-iced mountains and wateralls ;-D

what would you advise me to visit, concering landscapes and nature. It'd be places reachable by train or by car but not more than a day away, so that would mean dayly excursions.

And btw, concerning transport, do you have an approximate idea of the cost of renting a car? something like AVIS or if possible cheaper. My friend might be working by the time I'm here (at least he's desperate to find a job... if you know of something, I'll let him know!!)so I'd have to pay the rent ALL myself. Is there any requirement for a foreigner driving in Norway? a special permit?

oh yes, if you know of any web where I can check for all that informatin, that would be skjempe bra (for) meg.

Well, takk skal dere ha (is it right?)

PS: I've forgotten almost all Norks I knew...so sad.

I don't know the Trondheim area that well, so I can't give you any advice on day trips.

About car, with an EU driver's license you don't need any other special permit.
Renting is very expensive, but you may find some special deals and weekend rates. You'd almost be better off renting one back home and driving all the way up.

Your trouble, to tell you the truth, is that you will try to do Trøndelag out of Trondheim on a day-trip basis.
For one, you can go to Hell! It's a short ride away, near the airport. Nothing there, but you can buy a postcard of Hell and get it stamped in Hell and semnd iot to someone appropriate. That's for a very rainy day. Trondheim has in fact plenty to offer without having to go anywhere. There are some good places to eat (sea food and various etnic food), there is the stroll around town, Nordre gate street with ice cream eating and ogling other people who ogle you (very popular pastime), the produce and fruit/berry market at Torget, the Nidaros cathedral, the veterna boat moorde near the railway, the anachronistic Trondheim Beach (ask your friend what that is!!!!),the Munkholmen island for a sunny day of sea bathing (take a boat out there), hike the Bymarka forest and hills to the west of town. Maybe you are still in time for some salomon and sea trout fishing in Nidelva that winds through Trondheim. Near Malvik is a nice canyon and water falls.
For longer outings, I second Risberg who recommends Røros. Then go to Sula off the island of Frøya NW of Trondheim. Scheduled boats go to this community and you can make it as a day trip. Fast boats also go to Kristiansund and that will give you a glimpse of the rough coast westwards as well. Across the Trondheim Fjord are Åsen, Osen and other municipalities that has plenty to offer, but again, a day trip for seeing and doing things is perhaps stretching it... Good mountain scenery (perhaps more than a day trip, though, unless you are happy with the transit view only) in nearby Sylane (east), Gråfjellet (southwest) and Trollheimen (further south west). Furhter up the Trondehim Fjord are some nice, but quiet and not-so-much spectacular stuff for tourists. At Skarnsundet and Beistad there is exceptionally good deep sea fishing.
If you go day tripping west of Trondheim - by car - you will enter an area covered by my page Snillfjord, and this is the beginning of the area wehere you will come out of the dark spruce forest and rolling agricultural landscapes and the west coast dramatic fjord landscapes begin to appear; with lakes, waterfalls, cliffs and narrow fjords.
Wish you luck!
Olav

Hei!
I'm sorry I can't help you much with info on Northern Norway. I used to live in the west and the south, so if you ever visit there I can help with recommendations.

I did want to let you know, though that your Norsk looks pretty good and not to worry - once you are around it all day for a couple of days it will come back to you . I had not spoken it for over 15 years before I went back home to visit last fall and it came right back after a couple of days no problem. Your grammar may not be perfekt, but who cares? They love you for trying!

Also, as to info on driving, you can usually get great info on the following websites concerning all sorts of touristy things and requirements:

www.visitnorway.com
www.norway.com
www.norway.org

www.drive-alive.co.uk (has maps for driving and some good info and routes you might choose...this is a tour company, but the info here might be helpful)

For Trondheim and region-specific information, try:

www.trondheim.com (there is an english/engelsk option also)
