Lago di Como Swimming
Posted: Mon June 13, 2005 03:33 PM UTC
We're considering visiting Lake Como in July, and would like to be able to swim in the lake. Is it frigid or not too bad? Also, are there beaches or other places for swimming in the lake?

The water of lakes in Northern Italy is certainly colder than the water of the Mediterranean, but not colder than the water of the Atlantic. I am trying to give you some terms of comparison, because ideas about cold and warm can differ considerably.
About beaches, not all the towns around Lake Como have beaches. Where there are beaches, they consist of pebbles, not sand. On the shores of this lake you are more likely to find sun-worshippers and windsurfers than swimmers.
If you go to the webpage www.menaggio.com/eng/link1.php you will find a list of liks to various towns on the shores of Lake Como. In these websites you are likely to find information about beaches and accommodation.

Lago di Como Some advise : )

Hy Steve!
The lake of como is quite cold if you are used to swim in Italian sea but
when you are completely in the water you can take confidence with the low temperature!
But you always find very cold water running near a quite warm one. It's surprising.
And is beautiful stay in the middle of the lake... it's so deep and the colour is pure dark green : )
The shore isn't properly a beach. You can find only stones and sometimes they are like blade.
But it's normal for us to use the shore like beaches, we love summer!!! : )

My old grandpa always said me that is dangerous to swim in the lake 'cause there are many wirpools and someone lost his life for that.
I don't know if is a legend or the reality but It's better for you to know that : )
Also the little near Pusiano lake, Alserio's one and Minoprio lake have the same problem. So, pay attention.

Not all the beaches are open during the summer
Last year the municipality close some of them 'cause the pollution was very hight and dangerous for people.
But I saw many german people swim near the warning signals and I hope they are ok now! ah! ah!
Pay attention to the sun when the cold breeze is blowing from the lake:
You don't feel it on your skin but you can burn it : )

Have a nice travel and enjoy yourself!
See you in Italy!
Veronica
