I am a student on summer holiday. 4 other girls and I were going to Spain, but things have switched and we are looking to go to SP Aug. 4-12. Does anyone recommend as place to stay that is at max $65USD/night. Also, we are looking for non-tourist, chill things to do that don't require lots of money because we have $1000 dollars to spent together. Flights are not a problem, it is just an issue of place to stay, food, visas(I hear US citizens need one), and activities. We are open to all suggestions. Also, is it feasible to make a day trip to Rio? Thx

take a look in my Sao Paulo page, there is the address of Hotel Paulista, where I like to stay when in Sao Paulo; it's feasible to make a day trip to Rio by plane, but it's better to stay in Rio at least for the weekend; there are weekends packages to Rio from São Paulo which are not expensive; or you can take a bus and arrive here in 6 hours; Sao Paulo is not exactly the type of city people go for vacation, unless you have family or friends there.

Why Sao Paulo, a vast traffic-clogged industrial megapolis? You'd be far better off staying in beautiful, laid-back Rio.

First of all, for all people who says São Paulo it isn't a tourist place, I only can tell "OPEN YOUR MIND"...Sure NYC doesn't have the beachs of Miami, but it doesn't make NYC worthless of visiting...the same I think about São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
São Paulo have plently of stuff to do and see, besides lots of people to meet and hangout...endless museums, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping malls, pubs, etc...

Go for the island Ilhabela on the coast , just a few hours by bus, book a nice small hotel or pousada, and you will have the time of your life there !

You are from Boston. GO TO RIO!!!!
Go to Sao Paulo for a day.
In august will be very cool in SP(not exatally yours, but cool).
