| Aswan | Getting a felucca around Agilika/Philae island Posted: Tue June 7, 2005 03:49 AM UTC
We - a group of about 6-7 - would like to be able to hire a felucca for a leisurely sail *around* the temple on the island and not visit the actual temple itself (that's for another date). Are there feluccas for hire down at the port where the motor ferries normally take people across to the island or would we have to arrange for one to come down from Aswan to pick us up? Note that we don't want to sail all the way down or back from Aswan, but hop on board and go straight out around the island.

I am sure someone will come along with a better answer.
Anyway, when I was there last year I did not see any fellucas there, only motorboats. But I am sure they can also be hired for a group to drive around the islands.

Well, I am not sure what you want to do exactly. The boarding place to Philea Island from Aswan is very crowded with motor boats. I am not sure a Felluca can land there. Even if there are felluca's in this part of the Nile. I believe it is behind the cataract. The cataract is quite an obstruction for boats, and since not to many people want to sail around Agilika Island, I don't think there will be felluca's. But this is just a guess. You can always ask around in Aswan.
Love, Dora.

What we want is exactly that, to go for a sail (not put-putting in a motorboat) around the island and environs. I was hoping there might be feluccas stationed south of the cataract, it just seems strange that with the enormous trade in selling sailing jaunts on the Nile that a whole area of it would be left untended.

I would suggest you contact Mustafa Ramadan Achmed via his website (below) as it sounds like the sort of thing he could arrange for you. He is a super-nice guy and very trust worthy. I found him by accident - which was a stroke of luck for me, but he can be contacted via the details on this website.

*lol* Yes, the trip is well and truly over - you can read about some of it in my (slow growing) travel pages & album %L[http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/8d837/]here%L*.
But to answer my own question, there are no feluccas stationed in that part of the river, which is just below the dam. Millions of motorboat ferries, but no feluccas that I could see (which is not to say there weren't any tucked away, but I looked and didn't find any).

Whoops, that inserted link to our travel pages didn't work! But I'm sure everyone can copy-and-paste.
