calm water beaches?
Posted: Mon June 6, 2005 10:53 PM UTC
I'd like to spend a day sunning and swimming during my stay in Algarve (in between visits to Sagres, Salema, and Tavira). I'd really like to do this on a beach with calm water, not wavy and rough water. I've seen pictures of Lagos, but would like to avoid the summer crowds in Lagos. Are there other beaches with nice calm water that's great for swimming?

Thank you!

the beach in salema is a little protected and the waves are not bad there.
it's a very nice alternative to the more touristy places too.

Ilha da Tavira (I think that's the spelling) is a delightful sandbank just outside Tavira itself. Its has beaches exposed to the sea or, on the other side, sheltered. As its only a few minutes from one side to the other side, it won't be very taxing or strenuous! :) A favourite is also Olhao - a short ferry journey required across sandbanks.

In the zone of Tavira you have calm water beaches. In 15 days you may get between 13 to 15 days of calm water. The island of Tavira (Ilha de Tavira) has some nice beaches. My preferred is "Terra Estreita", also known as "Santa Luzia" beach. It's quite calm, there are no crowds and if you walk for 5 minutes from the main zone of the beach, you have all the space for you. I go there for more than 20 years and it's a delightful place. Also, Tavira is a very enjoyable town for holidays, very cultural, not crowded and with good food.

Thank you, everyone. It seems that I'll be able to find a nice calm-water swimming beach already on my itinerary.

I'm back from the Algarve jsut for one week. In the west of Faro (Albufeira, Sares etc.) beaches are in front of the (great) cliffline. In the east they are behind sandbanks. The best beach we found is near Cape Vincent (1km). You can find pictures of many beaches on my Algarve pages here. Regards, Michael
