Lake District National Park how busy is it in June ?
Posted: Mon June 6, 2005 09:21 PM UTC
Hi all

I am considering a trip to the lakes for about 3 nights from 20 June and was wondering how busy it is likely to be>

I went to snowdonia the same week 2 years ago and I often went 20 minutes plus on the road without seeing another car or human being (though obviously not that quiet in the main touristy parts). I'm guessing it's going to be busier than that but just how busy will it be in June ? Will it be much better than July/August - also how would Early/Mid Spetember comnpare ?

My plans b and C would be to return to Snowdonia or maybe look at the Yorkshire Dales.

Thanks

The lakes are always busy, though June is probably one of the better times to go (i.e. not in school holidays). You should try to avoid Windermere, Bowness, Grasmere and Ambleside if you want a quiet time. The further west parts of the Lakes tend to be quieter. Also, the crowds tend to go to places like Helvellyn, Great Gable and Scafell Pike. If you want to go hiking, get a map and be creative! Take a lower level route, or try walking away from the main peaks, and you ought to be able to find a secluded spot. Have fun!

Thanks for that - Hiking is a tad to strenuous for me - I'm very unfit n somewhat overweight - so more looking for short and easy walks. Have a decent guide which should help in that regard - am a sucker for Waterfalls, lakes n mountains so think the lakes should fulfil that criteria.

Thanks again for the reply and appreciate further feedback from others.

Thanks

Either June or early September would be better than July/ August, because of school hols. Same applies to Snowdonia/ Dales, though the Lakes are more popular & more crowded generally. Have to admit that's why I've not visited yet, though I've been to both other places.......I hate crowds. Think you'll have to accept that main touristy spots are going to be fairly busy in June/ Sept but far more tolerable than in July/ August. Hope you enjoy it anyway.

Hi there

Like the others have said, June is quite a pleasant month to visit and not too crowded if you avoid those tourist hot spots.

My parents live in the Lakes but because my mum isn't as active as she used to be we stick to low level, lake walks. Buttermere is a pretty lake and the approach over Honister Pass is fantastic. Borrowdale is a lovely area for low level walking, as is the Duddon Valley (where my parents live). However my favourite lake is Wastwater, especially when it's overcast and raining - the surrounding fells and screes look pretty formidable against the dark skies. There's also a great pub called the Wasdale Head Inn to shelter in!!
