| Isla de Roatán | Accommodation and diving in Roatan Posted: Sun June 5, 2005 05:53 PM UTC
Hey there
We will be heading to Roatan next wk and looking for a place to stay and to do some diving. Everyone seems to point to Anthonys Key Resort, however, it is quite a bit over our budget. Does anyone have any other suggestions, one of us hopes to a PADI course. Many thanks Shiobain |

Have you looked at TinKan's page yet? He's spent a lot of time on Roatan, & lives there part time. His page includes some great hotel recommendations:

Shiobain -
AKR is definitely expensive. Check out the listings at Travel-to-Honduras.com and at Roatanet.com. At each you will find a good assortment of operators and lodging. We've referred several folks to Bananarama and have had good reports. Have fun! Charlie Meador, La Ceiba, Honduras

Let me know how your trip went and what you recommend for non divers. We are heading there at the end of July from California and plan to stay on the West at at Luna Resort.

While I came in here a liitle late for the original poster I figured i would add a little from my experience. There are many accomodations to suit different needs on Roatan. While I have never stayed there I know AKR is priced higher than most but if very easy multipal days of repetitive diving is what you are looking for then the pricing is not bad at all. I have spent weeks on many different liveaboard dive boats, including the Bay Islands Aggressor, and while it is pricy, about $1300.00 US per person per week, it allows me the opportunity to dive many places that are difficult to get to landbased, Also allows opportunity to do 25+ dives per week without having to work to hard, three good meals a day as well as snacks and drinks.
If you are not a dive till you drop kind of person or rest of group is not, then most all inclusive dive reorts will seem expensive. There are many places to stay around the island quite inexpensive and dives average around $20.00 US. I agree with Charlie in that "Roatanet.com" is a good place to go for some info, Hotels, Rental properties, diving, Etc.. For those who are a little more outgoing and do not "need" every little thing planned for them there are many people such as myself who are not full time residents that rent our homes on a weekly basis. Whatever you decide I would suggest you rent a car for at least a day and do some Island touring. More than the one or two hours allocated by the all inclusve places. Diving is decent, typical Carriibean, yet if you do not take a little time to explore the Island and meet the people you will not see what Roatan is actully like.

Thanks for the info, UWC! I'm not a dive-till-you-drop type at all, so this is great for future reference, since Roatan's definitely on my list.

Well if it is on your list then come on down in October... I have a few rooms left as some of our folks have backed out... $800 for a week of diving or snorkling or even just sitting around the water. All meals included and a dolphin swim to boot... If you want to come then send me an email or if you want more info just let me know...

Stop it, Keith, yer killin' me! I wish I'd known about it sooner, I'm already booked for that month, darnit. But I've told a couple of diver friends about it.
Can you put me on the list to notify next time you are organizing one of these? Thanks...

I will put all the details for Feb together and get them to you. I am trying to get a few more so let me know if you know of anyone that may want to go. We could make it a VT trip.
The new house will not be ready until may of next year if all goes well this trip. Keith
