Just for comparison and from experience we rented from ECONOMY - RAV4 4X4 - $68.00 per day including insurance, unlimited mileage, good car, good A/C, 5 Speed manual transmission. No problems; we could have haggled the price if we had known some Spanish. The price changed from when we booked in the US from $350 to when we actually signed at $475 so be prepared. Check with your insurance company and see if you are insured in Costa Rica, I know mine carried me in Mexico but not in CR. If this is the case you can get a letter from your insurance agent and waive the coverage at the rental office. If you are planning on back roading it I would recommend a 4 wheel drive and its HOT so you will want A/C - worth the extra bucks and I would stick with a well known name like Hertz, Economy, Budget, etc, they have better maintained vehicles. Have a good trip!

I used Tricolor and didn't have any problems.I got the smallest 4x4 they rent in CR the Terrios.Small but reliable. Tricolors cars are probably older ones which is why they come out cheaper. My car was a cosmetic mess with scratches and dents here and there but a good car.I think they gave me an older one because I told them I was going to Golfito and beyond.Make sure you get them to fill out the form that lists existng damage(and make sure they see you taking some pictures of the car as you accepted it) They picked me up at the airport as well.Say hello to Osvaldo for me when you get there. The CR government has a monopoly on the insurance industry so don't expect your credit card to cover that fee.Buy as much insurance as you can afford! It's cheaper to rent away from the airport grounds -their site is very close by.Very close to the Mango Hotel-Pura Vida
Oh Yeah. You'll get your billed on your credit card about two months after you get home.
