Istanbul is the most obvious joice. Antalya is very nice and worth stopping by for a couple of days. I really liked Bursa. It is less touristy and has a fair amount to see and a certain charm.

Get out your map. If you are going to start in Istanbul just start down the Agean Coast all the way around to Antalya.

Ayvalik I hear is nice and not many tourists.

Izmir is fantastic. We stayed right on the water with a fantastic view of ships coming and going.

Kusadasi quite a tourist draw but it is close to Ephesus (Efes in Turkish)

Bodrum again another tourist draw but some great attractions. The hills overlooking Bodrum have some breathtaking veiws.

Fetihye a beautiful place

And on to Antalya.

You can take a train from Antalya to Ankara but perhaps you would prefer a bus.

On the way to Ankara perhaps a stop over in Afyon.

From Ankara you could hit Cappadocia before heading back to Istanbul.

You will cover a lot of miles but you will see a great deal.

Certainly, I have missed some spots but perhaps somebody can fill in the blanks a bit with their favorite cities.

Here is a link for one of the better bus lines:

I believe some of their luxury coaches are quite affordable and comfortable. I can't remember if this was the bus line we took from Izmir to Kusadasi.
