Bundesland Niederösterreich Ausflug von Wien
Posted: Fri June 3, 2005 01:40 PM UTC

my dear, this is an INTERNATIONAL forum and usually everybody should know English. It does not matter if you post in English here just because it is
the Austrian forum. Do I post in French in French forums? Even though I could,
I try to write in a language everybody here understands...

I am not going to argue or start an arguement here, but the most spoken language in the world is Chinese followed by Arabic and Spanish (both about the same), so in that case if this as an international (world) forum, we should all be writing in Chinese.

If you want to only talk in European terms, then the most spoken language in Europe is German, followed by French, then english as third, so if we are talking about a European forum, then German would be the language to use.

But as I said before, we are talking about Austria here, in which the official language is German. So it makes sense to ask a question about Austria in German. This way you dont get the typical ¨Lets Go¨ guide book type response of an over touristed place where the town is built to model the steriotypes foreigners have and everything is overpriced. You always get better information asking a local than asking someone from 2.000 km away who cant speak the local language and has no idea about the local culture except what he has seen in ¨The Sound of Music¨.

There is no law on VT in which language you have to post your questions. We even have so called language ambassadors (where I have the honor to represent the Austrian-German language.)
Steve, with all due respect I must politely ask you to understand and accept the whish of Joe to write in German.

I find it ridiculous. The basic writing language is English, I find it intolerant to people who want to understand it and don´t know German.
And yes, not everybody knows German, but most people in the world learn
English as a 2nd language and Lingua Franca...but as you wish, I just
regret it.

Steve, once again I must ask you to tolerate Joe's whish to post in German.
It is not ridiculous and certainly not intolerant but his right to do so.
Please feel free to write your posts in any language you'd like to and admit the same rights to other members of VT.

As said before, I wanted local input and not typical tourist input. Since the official language of Austria is German and not english, it is best to post the question in German. Common language is all a matter of location in fact, as in London there are over 300 languages spoken, but the common one is english. In Paris there are about the same, but the common one is French. In Vienna I am sure there are fewer 'non native' speakers than in London or Paris, but the common language for them all is German.

The comment about the sound of music, was in fact referring to the tourists and not to the locals....I didnt want someone from, say Brasil, giving me advice on what to see in Austria, when their only experience with the country was seeing a 1960s film full of steriotypes.

Okay then just post in German if you think people will give you better information then...
I just had in mind the many rude answers when you post in English in AUSTRIAN forums and just wanted to see how people react when it's done the other way
round...stil I think it's an English-speaking Forum here, mainly!
