See http://www.volterra.net/ - some very nice photos here...
Volterra is a town whose history is closely associated with Rome's, both as friend and enemy. Volterra was founded as an Etruscan town, and unlike Rome (which was occupied by the Etruscans but from whom virtually nothing remains), you can still see the footprint of the Etruscans in parts of the walls, buildings, and a necropolis. It's also just a pretty little town...and I haven't ever even been there ;-) Bill

Volterra is one of Tuscany's most evocative hilltowns. From the Etruscan gates to the remains of the Roman forum, you'll capture the real Italian hilltown experience there. It offers a rich -and blessedly small - array of ruins, art works and architecture from different historical periods, its pristine streets and spacious squares are relatively deserted, and it has a good choice of nice hotels and restaurants. All these features make it one of the most beautiful
Tuscan hill town (it is my favorite one). This is one of the best places in Italy to purchase alabaster: the streets are lined with showrooms and shops. It is worthy! regards!

Actually, I liked Volterra the best of all the medieval hilltop towns we visited in Tuscany. I found it to be less crowded, more reasonably priced, had a great view and had many fewer tourists. We stayed in the hills outside of Volterra and ended up visiting there several times during our 10 day stay. There is a lovely piazza in the center of town where there was a restaurant with outdoor tables. They accommodated a group of 20 people last minute, with no reservations and did so with a smile. It was by far the best meal of our trip and just indicative of how lovely and unaffected the people in Volterra are. San Gimignano is more famous and quite lovely and worth a visit also. But if I'm recommending between the two, I'd go to Volterra first in a heartbeat. The ruins just outside the city walls are magnificent as well. Go if you can.'
Ciao! Lorine
