kalamaki is most definitely a purpose-built resort rather than a greek village. it is the smaller sister resort to Laganas, which is one of the biggest resorts in greece. kalamaki has lots and lots of restaurants with all sorts of food, even some greek!

it does have a nice beach, and building was stopped right behind the beach because of nesting loggerhead sea turtles, which makes it much nicer. it is a shame they did not bring more building regulations into the main part of the resort. it is full of big concrete apartment complexes, not very pretty or imaginitive.

kalamaki is popular with young families as it does not have a big 'party culture' like laganas next to it. there are no motorboats allowed into the eastern bay of zakynthos because of the turtles and the water is clear and the beach gently shelving, so good for kids.

it is very close to the airport though, and you will have to be prepared for the noise of jet engines going just overhead every half an hour or so during the day - there are no night flights into zakynthos.

as far as sightseeing goes, you'll have to go out of the resort. zante town is not far away with shopping, museums, a sixteenth century fortress and nice places to hang out. lots to do around zakynthos as a whole. have a look of the friends of zakynthos website - they have lots of ideas.
