The Outeniqua Choo
Posted: Wed May 25, 2005 09:18 AM UTC
Hi guys

I have read about the Outeniqua Choo train. I have been on various web sites but have been unable to work out timing.

Is it possible to catch this train in Kysna and then return within a couple of hours. Is it worth going on, we are driving from Kynsa to George, are we better off just detouring through wilderness in the car, can you?

Regards

Tanya

Knysna and George isn't that far apart. in between you will find Wilderness which is beautiful. The coastal route is very nice.

Here's the website: http://www.onlinesources.co.za/chootjoe/timetable.htm
I thought there was a shuttle service (by bus) from George back to Knysna but I don't remember where I read that.
I'm not sure what's more spectacular: sitting in the train or seeing (and definitely hearing!) it several times along its trail. We've seen it depart in Knysna (spectacular, with the smoke of the steam engine and the sound of the horn) and arrive in George and seeing it pass several times along the road. In the meantime (2.5 hrs) we had visited Knysna and Wilderness (George didn't seem to be very interesting).

The train ride is definitely more scenic (and fun!) than the drive between George and Knysna (or vice versa), though I agree that one way is enough on the train. The train hugs the cliffs of the coastline between Victoria Bay and Wilderness, giving you spectacular views. The tracks also give you a much nicer view of the Wilderness lakes than the N2 highway, which is the only way to get between Knysna and Wilderness driving. Be warned, the N2 is currently under construction in 2-3 spots between Knysna and Wilderness (mostly between Sedgefield and Wilderness), and you can expect delays of up to 20 minutes in each spot.
