I'll be traveling the Stewart Cassiar Highway in July and looking for advice on where to stay. Also was wondering how long of a drive is if from Dease Lake over to Prince Rupert. Thanks!

Cassiar Mountains RE: Stewart Cassiar Highway

first of all, a bit of advice on traveling the stewart cassiar from someone who has probably driven it thirty times. Always keep to the right, particularly cresting hills. There are no lines to guide you. This is the most important rule. Watch out for wildlife on the road. Whoever is riding shotgun should keep an eye out for game. It is a spectacular road, but services are not as abundant as they are in the south. If you know when you are traveling, it is a good idea to book ahead, unless you are camping. Dease lake has a couple of places to stay. The arctic divide in is a good one, if they have space. The bear paw inn, run by austrians is also nice, if somewhat pricey. Bell two, a heli ski place in the winter is expensive. Check out the milepost magazine. I think they now have the stewart cassiar, (highway 37) listed. The bc government used to put out a decent brochure on the higfhway. Also, and I almost forgot, there is a place called moose meadows that is reasonably priced. These places are not listed in any kind of order, but if you google them most have websites, including my place, dawson peaks resort, which is at km 1232 on the alaska highway. hope this helps. dentisto, aka Yukon Dave.
