Top Votes for Day Trip-I'm indecisive!
Posted: Tue May 24, 2005 04:30 PM UTC
Hi...I'll be in Perugia for a very quick visit--July 5-6--. I've been to perugia a couple times before, although it's been 5/6 years. This time, I am with a friend of mine who hasn't ever been to Umbria. I was trying to come up with a daytrip from Perugia. I have been to Assisi, Gubbio, and Spoleto. But I can't decide what to do this year...All are wonderful. Soooo, I am looking for someone else to put their two cents in and basically nudge me in the right direction. Any votes for where to re-visit --or somewhere new-- to take my friend? (I'm sort of leaning toward Assis....????)
Has anyone ever been to Spello or Todi? Are those interesting day trips? She's not much into Etruscan history, but does love a good walk-around, so hills and hiking are plusses....

Thanks for your decision-making for me! ;-)

Whole Umbria is beautiful, all those places are situated on the top of the hills, like Perugia, Assisi... Orvieto has one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy, Lake Trasimeno is beautiful, Todi, Spoletto.., wherever you go you wont regret.

You can also try some unusual places. Colfiorito, on the Umbria-Abruzzo border has some of the greatest landscaps in Italy. Some movies and many tv commercials (that air all over the world) are shot in Abruzzo, near Campo Imperatore, one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. These places aren't popular tourist destinations, but if you're into the naturalistic rather than the historical trip, they might be your best shot. If you prefer a mix between the two, there's no wrong place to go in Umbria: they are all beautiful.

you guys are cracking me up! i was looking for some decisiveness, and all your wonderful suggestions have pretty much set me up for more choices...and have sent me back to the book store to search out other possibilities! :)
oh well, you're right---you just can't go wrong in Umbria--it's one of the most beautiful areas in the country!
I think i'd like to make it to Orvieto if I can do that in a day trip....

sigh. Italy. So many choices, never enough time!

We spent two weeks just outside of Todi and are going back again --- It's a great hilltown. Very few tourists, so it feels like an undiscovered gem. Like all hill towns, lots of great views as you wander through the back streets. So if you want your own quiet, unspoilt place to pretend to be an Italian, Todi's it. Has a music festival -- smaller and not as glitzy as Spoleto.
