You can hike up to Aguas Calientes as early as 6 am, the trains don't arrive until 10 am. So yes, there is an advantage of 4 hours then, and then in the afternoon, the trains start leaving at 3 pm, and you can stay onsite until dark so another advantage at night.
I thought Aguas Calientes was an interesting little town, once you walk away from the railway track "street". We stayed at a pretty low-end for the money place, La Caban(y)a (there's a Spanish n in there, can't do on my keyboard), about $30 per night, booked through Peruhotelsguide.com (requires a 30% deposit).
