Gare Montparnasse
Posted: Sat March 22, 2003 05:34 PM UTC
Hi

I'll be taking the TGV from Gare Montparnasse when I am in Paris , can anyone kindly advise:

1. Metro station is Montparnasse Bienvenue, right?
2. Is the metro station linked to the train station (underground) or I have to get out of the metro station and walk to the train station?

Help will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Yes, the metro station is Montparnasse Bienvenue. It is directly linked to the main train station via underground passages. All is well indicated. However, depending on what metro line you want, you might have to walk quite a bit.

The subway's station "Montparnasse Bienvenue" is a very big station, where cross themselves several lines. According to the line of subway that you will use, it will be you can be necessary to use a long rolling sidewalk. The station is indicated very well : " Gare grandes Lignes".
When one arrives by train, to take the subway, it is necessary to take mechanical stairs then to descend of the staircases, when one leaves the subway to go to the station, it is necessary to bring up all upside-down it.
It is indicated very well, equally to find the embankment : the road signs are clear and precise.

The question is already fully answered. So I wish to answer at a question you have not asked.

Montparnasse was the name of the small mount which was there.

Bienvenue was the name of the engineer who created the metro : Fulgence Bienvenue. It does not nean : welcome at the Montparnasse station.

As you come up the escalator from the metro be careful NOT to follow signs for BANLIEU.
You need to go all the way to the top of the stairs - as high as you can - to get to the TGV GRANDES LIGNES section.
The display board is easy to read with destinations shown. Check the number of the train which will also be on your ticket.
Be sure you get into the right carriage and seat because some of the trains seperate into two parts, sometimes at LE Mans, sometimes at RENNES.

All the essentials have been answered so I'll add some trivia.

When you get to the main line section, don't forget to have your ticket stamped in one of the orange machines. It's called "compster" in French and is essential you do it before boarding the train.

The TGV Grandes Lignes section are the tracks at the left end of the station when you come from the metro.

If you have time and not too much luggage to carry around, you can walk up to the roof of the station where there is quite a nice roof garden with a good view on the Tour Montparnasse.

If you are just arriving from somewhere else, Montparnasse has full toilet and showers facilities that you can use for a small fee. You can also buy toiletry essentials there.

Where are you going to from Paris? Bordeaux? Rennes? Brest? You should have a great time in any of those cities.

Forgot the 'o': stamping your ticket in the orange machine is called "composter". Nothing to do with compost, it's all about getting a semi-circular hole in the ticket and a date stamp so that you can't use it multiple times.
