Pingyao Travel Forum

Hi,
I want to go from Shenzen to Datong and PingYao, but am still looking for the best way to go from PingYao to Datong, and from Datong back to Shenzen. I understand that it is not possible to fly directly, but can anyone tell me what options there are with a stop over somewhere on route?
Also any suggestions for nice, different, good but still cheap hotels in PingYao and Datong would be very much appreciated!

Hi, there. This is Jason Lee, I'm live in Pingyao now, and used to work for Youth Hostel here. I would like to welcome you to Pingyao and tell you something about here. I advice you to go to Taiyuan first, where is the provincial capital, about 2 hours driving far from Pingyao. It's possible to get Taiyuan from Shenzheng directly. From Pingyao, you could get to Datong by train No.1673. Depart Pingyao at 23:21, arrive Datong at 7:40 next day moring. Hard-sleeper around RMB75. Soft-sleeper Around RMB120. From Taiyuan, bus is the best way to get to Pingyao. Take taxi from airport to bus station (RMB25), then take the bus to Pingyao(RMB20/p.p). The bus leave taiyuan to Pingyao at every hour, so no worries and hurries. As far as good hostel, lots of options. You could stay in Youth Hostel, clean, friendly staff, traditional courtyards. And meanwhile, some family running hostels are good and cheap as well, it's up to you. OK, that's all, just let me know if you wanna get more details about here!

Despite offering some amazing cultural and historical sights, Datong is not that famous for tourists, so there is no huge number of places to stay.

For YH I recommend the FEITIAN BINGUAN, which is opposite to the trainstation on left side of the suare. They charge 40 Kuai for 3 bed dormitory. Facilities are ok, toilets in Chinese style.

You can get to Datong from Beijing as Hard Seat for 46Yuan and nearly 6h or by Hard Sleeper from Xian (I went the other direction to Xian for 130 Kuai)
