Hilo Turtle Conservation Program in Hilo
Posted: Thu May 19, 2005 05:56 PM UTC
Has anyone does this program or heard of it? i hear it involes hikes over lava beds to remote beaches and camping there during the day to search for turtles at night and stuff. Just wondering if this would be a good experience and if it will be safe. What about tsunamis or unpredictable weather? i would start June 15. Thank you so much. Any information would be great.

No tsunamis here or my townhouse is under water. I'm not familiar with your program, but there are several nature walks and they are safe. Just don't get too close to flowing hot lava because the crust will break off and drop you into the hot stuff. If you have a guide then you will be well taken care of. Lot's of interesting things for you to see and do on the Big Island. Weather can be cool and maybe rain near the volcano and then turn hot and sunny. Hiking boots are nice to have.

I do not have any answers for you, which probably does not matter since it is now august. But I would like to know what you found out. Did you do the program. If so what was it like. If not, why not. Is there going to be more opportunities to work with the turtles? I am moving to Hilo in the spring (2006) and am looking for opportunities like the turtles. Thanks for any info you can give me.
sincerely..
