generally no, but if you visit the local REI store in north california, then you should be able to buy a good quality tent for a good price.

I believe REI does rent camping equipment. If you're going to have it for a month though, it might be cheaper to purchase the stuff and then sell it (or give it away) on craigslist.com.

we took a very cheap tent to Italy with us, used it one night in Sicily, and then gave it to the little girl camped next to us, still way cheaper then a motel.

The stores mentioned in previous messages have web sites (REI.com or Target.com) where you can locate the store closest to where you will be. Any other sporting goods stores will also sell tents, sleeping bags, etc., or whatever else you will need for camping. Have a wonderful time exploring our parks!
Also California is know for having warm weather but coastal areas are foggy in the summertime and can be quiet cold. If you end up freezing at the coast just travel inland and you should find the sun. :)

If the camping does not work out, most parks have "day use" areas that provide picnic tables and sometimes a fire pit or barbeque to cook food. Also most parks have main roads through the park to enjoy some of the sites and short trails near the ranger stations you can enjoy during a day visit.
Depending on how remote you plan to travel, you should be able to find motels in cities or towns near our national or state parks. Of course the farther out you go, the fewer motels you will have to choose from.

The tent camping is a great idea. Lodging, especially in Calif can be very pricey. In California, especially coastal Calif, you can expect good weather.
Since you're traveling in summer, suggest you make reservations for your campsites, especially if you're doing Yosemite (don't miss it if you are anywhere near it) or coastal California as they get booked up. In California, you might look for State Parks as well as we have some amazing ones. Would recommend you buy the book California Camping which lists campsites of all kinds and which you need to get reserved. Its the most well-worn book I own. If you decide to hit Northern California and San Francisco area, re-post and would be glad to share some advice about parks.
