for £££ reasons cannot fly into Graz itself,
What would be the suggested 2nd choice? Would it be Vienna purely for the decent transport links?

Wondered if you had tried Ryanair for Graz? I flew to Graz very cheaply from Stansted last October and it was certainly a lot cheaper than if I had flown to Vienna and then taken the train which is what I would have preferred to do (easy enough to do with a coach direct from VIE airport to the Sudbahnhof where trains leave for Graz about once an hour but bear in mind that's going to add 60 euros per person for a return 2nd class train ticket).

You could try Klagenfurt (which Ryanair also fly to from STN). You can get a train to Graz from there (probably changing at Bruck an der Mur) and it takes around 2.5-3 hrs. About the same time (and probably approx same cost) as the train Vienna-Graz.

If you can get cheap flights to Vienna it's an easy enough journey to do to get down to Graz and pretty too since you go thru the Semmering pass - and it might give you a chance to look about in Vienna while you're there as well as going to Graz. So probably that's the most interesting option for an alternative airport.

Just a thought: You might try Zagreb or Ljubljana. Graz is roughly equidistant between both and Vienna. The question is which would have easier train access to Graz. My guess would be Ljubljana, and EasyJet flies in there from Stansted. Actually, Ryan Air serves Graz according to their web site... Have you checked their fares??

Hey! Why don´t ya choose Klagenfurt? It is nearer to Graz than any other Airport...

The 2nd nearest airport is definitely Maribor/Marburg. The only problem is that they have only one scheduled flight from Paris via Salzburg.

So apart from THOSE two airports. What would be the next closest :-D
