How likely am I to get a first- come, first -serve camping location? Posted: Thu May 12, 2005 10:42 PM UTC
Hi there! I'm going to Yosemite in mid July and am astonished at how quickly the camping grounds filled up. I noticed there were 7 first-come, first-serve camp sites. How likely am I to wait until that morning to get a camp site? Should I just book a tent at Curry Village and play it safe? Also, what is this camping permit about? Is that for all people who want to set up a tent? Sorry so many questions. Thanks so much for your help!

You have two chances "slim and none" I would take the safe bet. July is a very busy time for the entire area.

Here's what they say about non-reserved camping
www.nps.gov/yose/trip/nrcamping.htm
n order to have a reasonable chance of finding a campsite from spring through fall, you should arrive by noon on weekdays and midmorning on weekends. (Camp 4 usually fills by 9 am.)
And here's what they say about who can stay if you have a camping permit at one site:
www.nps.gov/yose/trip/camping.htm
There is a maximum of 6 people (including children) and 2 vehicles per campsite.

Thank you! I just reserved a tent cabin at Curry Village. It was a lot of money for a tent but I'm sure I'll be thanking you when I get there and it's packed. Thanks a lot for your help!

That was a good decision on your part! We got to Yosemite on August 28 last year, by noon, and we couldn't get ANY place to stay in the valley that night. We'd decided to cut our trip to Sequoia short and see if we could add a night to our Yosemite trip. We ended up in a hotel room in Groveland. So -- you'll enjoy the tent-cabin more. :-)

Hi,
I am glad you got the tent cabin. Actually, it is more than a tent. It has wooden floor and sides and regular beds which the maids make up. One caution, it can get cold, so pack something warm to sleep in. I know you will enjoy...and if you think the Tent cabins are expensive, look at the prices for the Awanhee.
Happy Travels, Jim
