Yokohama Hakugan shumai
Posted: Wed May 11, 2005 07:35 AM UTC
Half a century ago the very best shumai in Yokohama -- or anywhere else I visited in Japan -- was at Hakugan, a Chinese restaurant that specialized in that delicacy. It was located on Isezaki-cho. Does anyone know if it's still there?

I suppose you are talking about Hakuga.
If so, regret to tell but there is no more...

It is said that no one was capable to be the successor of the shop.

Thanks.

That's too bad. I'd have made a special trip to Yokohama for Hakuga's shumai.

Yokohama Good news about Hakuga shiumai!!!
Posted: Thu May 12, 2005 03:50 PM UTC
I got a good news that the Hakuga shiumai still alive!

The original Hakuga shop was closed in 1975 and its taste once have become a regend. But, later, the inhabitants of Isezaki-cho did well so that the taste is now succeeded by a Taiwanese food shop Long Champs and you can buy it in a shop on the ground floor of Yokohama Matsuzakaya department store.

You may fly over for the shiumai again ; )

Thanks, Stonefree.

I'll be stopping over in Tokyo en route to another East Asia destination this fall. Somehow I will get to Yokohama and the Matsuzakaya shumai shop.
