Hi!
As we were in Mayo, we stood in a town called Cong, which is between numerous lakes in a very nice area.
As we also travelled with our son (3,5 years old) I can recommend you the hostel we were living in "Cong Hosel and Caravan and Camping Park". Here you've got the link to it:

This hostel is located about 2 km away from town and it's very quiet.
If you have any special question about, just feel free to ask!
May greetings!

Enniscrone is only 12km from Ballina in Co. Mayo. 5km of beach, swimming pool, golf club, fishing and and.....

This is what they say on the site:
"Enniscrone, well known for its magnificent sunsets, takes pride in being one of Irelandīs most popular seaside resorts. It has a 5km stretch of lovely safe beach surrounded by dunes."

We stayed with this company about 3 times now and I must say they are one of the best out there.

I can only recommend Achill Island

-- http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/74c7d/489dc/ ---

although the weather is rarely so nice as in my opening pic. There are plenty of self catering offerings

Very nice are the towns along Clew Bay, beginning with Louisburgh (great also for visiting Connemara and Galway), Westport (wonderful place!!!), Newport and Mulranny.

I would recommend doing a search on google typing in the towns or "Mayo" and "self-catering" -- you'll find a lot of places.

Just for the record: During our one week's stay on Achill Island, we never had any midge trouble. It was a pretty cool and windy July, though, and the Mayo peatlands are certainly a habitat for the midges. They do not seem to be that much of a problem as they are in Scotland, though. At any rate, I disagree with the advice to avoid Ocean Edges. Even if there are midges, they will only become a problem in dim light conditions and low windspeeds. The combination of these conditions is quite rare.

Win,
just recovering from the midge bites he received in Glen Shiel while getting out of the car to do a couple of sunset pics :-((
