we are visiting Capri and wish to see the Amalfi coast. If we take a boat from Capri to Amalfi we could then get the bus from Amalfi to Sorrento and the boat back to Capri in the evening. Is the bus trip worth doing in this direction or is it more scenic going from Sorrento to Amalfi? Should we spend a night in Sorrento or Positano or is Capri better than either of these?

well, no body else has tackled what is a difficult question. For starters as I recall the entire coast is quite spectacular, but the stretches between amalfi and positano and then between positano around the end of the peninsula and back around to sorrento are probably more attractive. You could take the ferry from capri to sorrento or positano rather than amalfi (in rough weather the ferry bypasses positano and goes directly to amalfi. As for spending a night, positano is a beautiful village and we loved it there. Really a matter of personal choice and convenience as capri of course is similar. You have a no-lose proposition.

Depending on when you intend visiting these places. Should the sea be rough, they would cancel the crossing without any notice so do noy be disappointed. Last time we stayed at Sorrento and wanted to visit Capri but was disappointed due to the high tides and the crossing were cancelled. Anyway, we will visit these areas again shortly.

obviously rough weather is an issue in this area. The positano - amalfi - sorrento ferry is much more likely to be cancelled than the large hydrofoils to sorrento. The most important thing is that you simply cant go wrong in this area even if you never get off Capri. You will love this.
