Isla de Roatán Dreaded Cruise--Can I hire private tourguide in Port??
Posted: Thu May 5, 2005 02:25 PM UTC
In early August, I will take a family cruise for the first time. We will stop in Grand Cayman, Belize, Roatan ( Honduras), and Cozumel. Of course, the ship offers shore excursions, but I would prefer a local guide if possible ( and if prudent). I realize it is in the cruise line's best interest to scare passengers from taking anything but ship-sponsored tours, but I am also well aware of the local economics and would prefer to employ a private individual or company for excursions. Can anyone out there give me any tips or advice on such things?...or tips on must-see, must-do, must buy, or stay-away-from things? Thanks for any help or referrals you can offer.

Beav -

You may want to check out the postings at RoatanForums (http://www.roatanforums.com/forums/). They cover quite a few different areas of excursions on the island and many are geared toward crusie ship visitors.

hi there!!! I just got back from that same trip......Roatan is gorgeous!!!!! I loved it b/c it was not modernized at all and very cultural......My husband and I were not there very long so we just had a couple of beers and walked around the shops.....The people are very very nice. Roatan is very poverty stricken and it is very sad b/c it is so beautiful!!!!! There is a place called Denny's Bar and grill at Westside beach and it has the best burger. The price was amazingly cheap.....4 corona's 2 local beers and 2 hamburgers for $14. The family who owns it are very friendly and really appreciate the business.....Don't get Westside confused with Westbay....If you get confused just ask for the beach closest to the port......Also, when you get off, the local people will try to get you to rent a scooter.....DON"T....Also there will be 20 to 30 taxi drivers trying to win your business......you can get them to drop the price, but I wouldn't b/c they need to feed their families too....Alright well have fun!!!!
