| Lago di Como | Bus service from Malpensa to Varenna? Posted: Mon May 2, 2005 03:11 PM UTC
I'm planning to arrive at Malpensa in August and then go directly to Varenna. I know get a train via Stazione Centrale in Milan, but I'm going with my mother, so the fewer connections, the better. I have heard that there is a bus that leaves Malpensa and goes to Varenna. Can't find any information about schedules. Anyone know anything that might help me?

There is no direct bus from Malpensa to Varenna. However, the bus+train combination is not complicated. At the airport you take the bus to Stazione Centrale (plenty of room for luggage, tickets are sold by the driver and cost 5 euros), departures are every 20 minutes. When you arrive at Stazione Centrale you buy the tickets to Varenna (counters are on the ground floor, price of the ticket about 5 euros). Important: the trains that stop in Varenna are the ones going to Sondrio or Tirano.

Milano Centrale is a huge railway station, the malpensa express bus service takes you to the entrance, the ticket kiosk attendants speak english and are helpfull. (Check the website www.trenitalia.it) When arriving at Varenna be aware that there is a fairly steep hill down to the village although there are generally taxis at the station should you require one. I hope you fall in love with Varenna in the same way I did, I'm going back in September for my 50th birthday. I hope you're staying at the Albergo Milano, if so please give my regards to Betina and Egi. I have driven from Malpensa to Varenna, belive me its the wrong way to travel. If I can be of any further help drop me a line.
Regards, Billy Gonella
