| Oaxaca | Backpackers bus from Mexico City to Oaxaca? Posted: Fri April 29, 2005 12:01 PM UTC
I have information on a backpackers bus service that operates from Mexico City to Oaxaca. Unfortunately all efforts to confirm this service has come to nothing.
Does anyone have the details of who to contact for this service? I am a first time visitor to Mexico and are travelling on my own, so I would like to make sure I have as much info as possible before I head off. Thanks! |

If such a "backpackers bus service" operates - I've never heard mention of it. I've not seen mention of it in any of the travel guides, or in online discussions, either. There was, for a short time, a "van" service that picked-up travelers in the Centro Historico District (including one of the hostals) of Mexico City and brought them to Oaxaca, but, from what I recally, the service was terminated a year or more ago.
Travel by bus within Mexico is efficient and relatively inexpensive. You can get to just about anywhere in the country by bus. The current price of a ticket for first-class travel between Mexico City and Oaxaca is MX$305 (+/- US$27) and the travel time is slightly more than 6 hours. There's probably "second-class" service available for a lesser price but finding information about that on the internet is next to impossible ot accomplish. To do this you'd likely have to stand along side a highway - like a hitchhiker - and wave-down a second class bus (and there's no assurance that you'll know which busses they are before they blow on past you). Busses headed for Oaxaca leave Mexico City almost hourly between the hours of 7 a.m. and Midnight from the "TAPO" station. Except at Semana Santa and Christmas/New Year's holiday periods, there's really no reason to make advance reservations. Just show-up at TAPO and buy a seat on the next-departing bus. Guidebooks are helpful when traveling and I've found both the Lonely Planet and Moon guides to Mexico good resources on my trips. One or the other will suffice. Although, if Oaxaca is where you'll be spending much of your time, I think Moon does a better job of covering that part of Mexico. Enjoy the adventure!
