Ronda Motion sick son :)
Posted: Fri April 22, 2005 11:23 PM UTC
Traveling with 13 y/o son this summer, first time in Espana. Driving from Tarifa/Gibraltar to Ronda. My son tends to get carsick- sounds like winding road but how much so? Other ways. Leave son behind (kidding)?
Also, best route (and approx. time) to drive from Ronda to Granada.
Thanks!

Hi,
My sympathies! I get car sick too and I'm *much* older than your son. I am travelling to Europe in a few weeks and plan to use ginger tablets(from pharmacies) and some ginger 'chews'(lollies) that I can get at the supermarket. They both work really really well. My son(a pharmacist)also suggests the motion sickness bands that are worn on the wrist(not tried so can't comment on these).
Hope this helps-and have a terrific trip.

Presume you are staying in tarifa. The road east which goes past Algeciras is windy and windy. If you get my drift ! There's a coffee place at the top which on a clear day has great views. Can see the whole of Africa ! Well maybe not the entire continent but North Morocco. This place is also a good place to stop for a breather. Once going into Algeciras the road gets straight and when you hit the coast it's a dual carriage road. You can turn off the road a few kms when you see the sign for Ronda and Jimena. However, don't ! This is a scenic route that will not be could for you. Carry on and the road is smooth and straight. get onto the 'motorway' Autopista and pay a small toll (maybe a couple of Euros) continue until you see signs for Exit 172, Ronda, San Pedro de Alcántara.
The road up through the mountain to Ronda is used by many vehicles. It's quite possible to stop although a little tricky in places, and you also get fine views back over towards the Rock of Gibraltar. This is the windy road but it's not horrendous.
Please make use of the great map facility on www.viamichelin.com where you can input driving directions and get some help.
By the way, the train journey from Algeciras to Ronda is beautiful and would appeal to your son. You can get one of the few local trains. For example there is one that leaves Algeciras station at 12.10 and gets to Ronda station at 14.04.

Scopolomine patch (the flesh colored band aid looking thing behind the ears you keep on nonstop for 72 hrs). It has worked wonders for me on train trips and cruises (oh to read on a train---such FREEDOM). And I am Mr. Barf: I can't even look at someone in a car when carrying on a conversation. The only side effect for me was dry mouth though some experience sleepiness. It's a prescription so not sure about it's use in kids.
