thanks Matz, i was kind of aware of this link, i was more asking of some hands-on experience and tips on the actual trip if someone has done it. I assume it's pretty straighforward to pass the customs now with Romania joinng the EU and Hungary already in.
still useful link the bahn link, thanks again. PS: You have a nicely filled travel map ! :-)

I did this trip in 1994.
Things may have changed for the better, but maybe not! Watch out for the guard stealing part of your ticket and then trying to make you pay extra. Be prepared to bribe the guard if you want a peaceful trip. I would recommend travel during daytime if possible. Also, more trains used to go to and from Arad. This is not too far from Timisoara and a taxi should be pretty cheap. You might want to consider this as a possibility. Sorry I am not more up to date. Timisoara is a really nice town and there is a good hotel which was the dictators former residence there. The main hotel is (was) full of criminal types. If you want the name of the good one, let me know and I'll look it up. Colin Colin

Things seriously changed since 1994 and the information provided by #3 is outdated now. Your trains:
Budapest Keleti - Timisoara Nord - Train no. 09.30-15.34 IC47 13.10-19.52 R355 Your only concern for this leg is to ask and make sure you get a seat reservation when you buy the ticket in Budapest, as it is compulsory for the type of train in Romania. That is all. As for hotels in Timisoara, most of them have been completely refurbished. One of the cheapest and also nicely refurbished one is www.hotelnord.ro, just across the street from the railway station and 10 minutes walking from the centre. The other hotels in the city centre are more expensive. Best regards, Alex

Thanks for your replies friends. A friend of mine will arrange a mini-bus pick-up from Budapest airport, it seems like locals also use this way of transport because you save one hour of trip due to shorter customs checks. Although i am told there is flooding right now in the area and some transport is interrupted :-)
For the borders experience from 1994 i am sure this is prehistory now, i fully trust the authorities of a country that is half step from the EU. I will check out the hotel link, thanks. I might come back with more soon.

Traveling by train from Budapest, the scenery is just beautiful! Tt is/was in 1999 for me about a 4 hour ride. The ride ends in Arad, Romania. You will need to catch a taxi for the hour ride to Timisoara. Get your fare for the ride up front and know where you are going when you get in the taxi. Hopefully you will find a English speaking driver. Or you could call and make arrangements from Budapest who I recommend Calin Boruga who lives in Timisoara, for Taxi - Translator - Guide - his tele # is 0722534647 - I use him when I visit Timisoara - He speaks ENGLISH! Which you will need in Timisoara.
Hope you are making it out to some of the villages. Have fun!

has anyone detailled informations about when and at where busses leave from budapest to timisoara and which companies provide this service? how much is the ticket? last year i travelled from budapest to cluj for maybe 16-18 euros from the nepliget station. i found the connection on www.volanbusz.hu .....but there are no connections to timisoara. i read that there are busses leaving from nepstadion. is it right? ...would be great to know times, prices (where can i buy the tickets?) and maybe companies.
